The tradition of
offering the guests at a baby shower a little "favor" to
take home all began with weddings. For centuries its been a custom
for the bride and groom to give their wedding guests favors. It all
began with an age-old belief that almonds were a symbol of fertility,
so dating back to ancient times, a bride and groom would offer
candy-coated almonds to their guests, in the belief that it would
increase their chances of succesfully conceiving lots of babies. As
time wore on, couples started giving guests other types of candy in
place of the candy coated almonds, and then eventually, other little
tokens were offered as well. Eventually, this tradition of offering
guests a favor caught on for bridal showers and baby showers as well.
The Italians
called the original candied almonds that started it all
"confetti", and they remain the favor of choice at
traditional Italian weddings. You might find it interesting to know
that this is where paper confetti (the type made for tossing at the
bride and groom) gets it's name.

attended a wedding in the 1970s, you may recall those little pastel
colored wedding mints that were so typical for wedding favors during
